A Fortunate Accident

Jay Silas coughed from inside a cloud of multi colored smoke. He waved his hand to try and clear the air and tried not to panic. He hadn't been working with anything too caustic and he couldn't feel any tingling or burning on his skin. Blinking a few times he was thankful to see the smoke quickly dissipating. He coughed again and inspected himself. Other than a few singes to his lab coat he seemed unharmed.

Jay had been working hard on developing a new formula for perfumes. His goal was to make them last longer without clogging pores or causing rashes. Clearly he'd miscalculated on something. Fortunately it didn't seem like there was any damage and he could try again. Jay finally noticed the clock. It was already 7pm. He'd stayed late without realizing it. AGAIN. Samantha, his wife, was not going to be happy.

Sighing, Jay tried to reorganize the mess in front of him before heading out of the office. It wasn't that Sam hated his job, he'd just worked one too many late shifts and been somewhat neglectful. I'll make it up to her, he planned as he drove home. He truly loved his wife, he just also had a tendency to get caught up in his work.

Jay arrived home and was surprised to see not only his wife's car in the drive way, but also Jessica's, his eldest daughter. What's she doing home from college? He mused as he walked up to the front door. Stepping inside he wondered if he should go get cleaned up or try and find Sam and explain his lateness.
