A Lost Knight's Romance

I wake up in a well stocked barn, burning down around me. As smoke begins to fill the air, I rise to my feet and begin making my way to the door. I pass a stable and hear a horse cry out as it expires from a combination of the smoke in the air and the trauma of the burn on its flesh, the smell tainting the air I run into the barn door. I throw my body at the door with all of my might, hoping to force the seemingly locked door to give way to fresh air, but it yields not even an inch.

I lay down on my stomach in an effort to escape from the smoke, but the fire is too intense. Every breath I take is more labored than the last. I suppose that it was luck that let me pass out before the flames overtook my body, but there was no final thought to rush through my head, simply a feeling of emptiness in my chest. I had always heard that your life is supposed to flash before your eyes just before you die, but I saw nothing, just darkness. As my subconscious mind has finally accepted that this was the way that I was going to die, my eyes opened once more.

A gasp fills my lungs with air, as I shoot up to a sitting position from my bedroll. Recalling where I last laid down my head, I see a forest and a crude fire pit. "Hey boss. Another nightmare, huh? When are you going to tell me about them?" chirped my companion Grey.

"I will tell you whatever I want, whenever I damn well please Grey. Never forget that compared to me, you are nothing more than an insect." I snarled at the only person in my life that I could call a friend. I turned my head to take in Grey's visage.
