A New Ruler and a New Queen

It is an age of kings, castles, knights and swords. The world is locked in a prolonged conflict as kingdoms of all sizes try to expand their land and wealth. Among these kingdoms is my homeland, a mid sized nation currently fighting a war on two fronts. My father, the king has died of heart failure and to the surprise of every noble and commoner in the kingdom I was crowned his successor.

As the youngest son and 9th heir to the throne, the people are in shock as I am crowned emperor of my father?s nation. I am barely nineteen years old and have been handed the responsibility of ruling over thousands of people who will now depend on me for guidance in these desperate times. Luckily for both them and I, I have been assigned an advisor, Jeremiah a high ranking noble who is to aid me in making the transition from prince to king.

?Jeremiah?why were my brothers not chosen, why me?? I ask him as we walked about the eastern palace garden.

'The king left specific instructions as to how to proceed should he meet an untimely death.? Jeremiah told me.

?I see?? I still did not understand why I was chosen. My father and I rarely had contact and in the past I was unsure as to whether he even knew my name. After we had made it to the river that ran beside the palace I sat down and watched the water run down stream for a short while. I could tell Jeremiah found my admiration of nature boring.

?Master, you have many matters to attend to, is it wise to spend so much time idly staring at flowing water.? Jeremiah asked.

'Matters? What matters need attending to?? No one had told me anything since the crowning ceremony.

?Well the most pressing matter at the moment is for you to choose a queen. We have already had many invitations from neighboring nations with??

?I must choose a queen?? I interrupted him.

?Yes your majesty. The choosing of a queen can be viewed as a wonderful opportunity to open relations with other kingdoms and strengthen our own influence

in world politics.? Jeremiah told me.

?I see, but what will happen to my mother?? I asked.

?Your father instructed for her to be given a small area of land to rule over in the southern territories.?

?My father is dead Jeremiah. I am king and I will not allow her to be cast aside, she will remain here in the palace.? I said sternly.

?As you wish my lord.? Jeremiah said.

?I also refuse to marry a stranger of a foreign nation. If we wish to win the people over in these difficult times then I must marry one of our own. Instilling pride in the hearts of the commoners, and satisfying the aristocrats at the same time.? I said.

?Excellent my lord. Just give me a name and I will fetch your new bride for you.? Jeremiah bowed his head.

?I see?so I may now have anyone in the kingdom, bring me?? I thought it over. I had often longed for many of my sisters but we all knew my father was planning to marry them off to foreign kings. Now I found myself in a position to have whichever one of them I desired. I had also always had a longing for my mother but I was still a bit insecure about how she would feel about such a situation.
