A Reunion

First Name = Male Name
Last Name = Female Name

The day is sunny and bright as you leave the airport terminal. You take a moment to sniff the air at the small regional airport, then proceed to the Hertz kiosk to pick up your rental. As you step up to the desk the attendant, a plump but pretty girl in her early twenties gives you a smile, "Hello, how may I help you today?"

You smile right back at her, and hand her the print out receipt of your rental. She takes it as you dig into your wallet for your credit card, and drivers license. "Just here to pick my car up...Lacey." You reply, glancing at her name tag.

"Certainly." She goes over the document, then takes your card and license with her to the copier. As she does that you glance around you, seeing if you see any familiar faces.

You hadn't been home in almost three and a half years, and you actually feel oddly excited to be here. You had thought coming back would bring too many painful memories back. Memories of Doe. You hadn't seen her since the weekend before her wedding to that asshole Hank. Actually, you think, he wasn't the asshole. You were really. You had met Doe in elementary school, and had always had a crush on her. You just never had the balls to admit it to her, mainly because you remember the fights your parents had, and you didn't want that as well. Basically you had a fear of commitment.

Lacey returns to the desk with a receipt to sign, and a folder with the keys in it. "Okay, Mr. Jones, just sign here for your receipt. The car is in B32. When you return it next Monday put it back in that spot, and fill the tank up or that'll be an extra thirty dollars."

You nod as you take her proffered pen and sign on the line. You grab the folder and look up at her, "Thank you Lacey, and you have a fine day."

You grab your bags and turn towards the parking lot.

Two minutes later you key open the trunk and place your bags into it. You stop again looking around. You smile, realizing how much you missed this place. Well, not the airport actually, just it felt good to be back. Your old stomping grounds, so to speak. Of course the circumstances of your return could have been better. What with your mother being sick and all.

You sigh getting into the drivers seat, starting the car you pull out.

Thirty minutes late you are driving down the block to your old home. You see your father, Charlie, on the front lawn doing some yard work. He looks over at the car pulling in. He smiles when he sees you. He drops his hedge clippers and walks over to the car.

You step out of the car, and offer a handshake to your old man. He takes the hand and pulls you into a hug. "Handshake? Its been too long for just a handshake son." You never actually did catch up to his height, as he was still about two inches taller.

"How are you dad? Sorry I haven't been around more frequently, its just I only recently got the promotion that would leave me with the extra cash to come home." You glance at the house, and the upper front window. "Hows mom?"

Your fathers face falls, "She has her days. She has her days. Docs said if we had caught it earlier it would have been much simpler. But...Shes bald you know.

You nod, "Thats chemo for ya. I'm going to go up and see her okay?"

"Of course son. Today is one of her better days. She was practically giddy today in fact." You father glances at another car in the driveway. "I should warn you though, Doe is here."

"Shes here? Why?" You ask, suddenly a little nervous.

"John, shes practically our child, what with you two being almost inseparable as kids. Besides shes a nurse at the RMC and she asked to be assigned to her. Shes here three days a week to administer medication and such."

You nod, she would insist. "Alright, its no problem."

"Son, what happened to you two?"

"I loved her dad. And she married someone else. I couldnt bear to see that. Her. It hurt too much."

Your dad nods, "I can understand that. Now go see your mother. Ill be up in a bit."
