Adventures in Academia

Phoenix’s phone buzzed, waking him up.

“Shit, who could that be?” He muttered sleepily to himself. Sure, it was already 3 in the afternoon on a Wednesday, but Phoenix had been up late last night. Straight out of class to a tutoring gig, then work on his thesis until the early morning hours. It was crunch time. Only a few more weeks to go.

It was Dominique.

Wake up sleepyhead

Phoenix sighed. He knew what the problem was. He was supposed to meet her for lunch two hours ago. He threw his phone on the bed and sat up. His toned abs caught the sunlight now filtering in through the partially closed blinds. He yawned and stretched his muscular arms over his head.

As once he got up and shuffled lazily towards the kitchen. Of course, being a one room apartment he didn’t have to go too far. After a quick cup of instant coffee he walked over to the bed again. As he passed he saw his computer screen was still on, still open to the master's thesis he was working on. Mapping the transition from pagan rituals to Christianity in medieval literature. It was a lot of work.

Looking closer he noticed there was a new email notification on his taskbar. Phoenix walked over to check. He opened his email client to find 15, though most of them were spam. One of the three that weren’t was from another tutor that worked with Phoenix sometimes, Isabel. She was a couple years older than Phoenix, 29 in fact, and always seemed insecure about turning 30.

Hey I need you to take Martin on Friday, 8pm. I’m suuuuuuper busy. Sorry! I’ll owe you one I swearrrrrr. :)

Isa liked to talk like a high school girl in the hopes people wouldn’t think she was nearly 30. Sometimes it worked.

Don’t worry, I’ll buy drinks next time. TTYL!
Isa~ <3

Phoenix was certain no one said “TTYL” anymore and continued to the next email.

It was from Ana, an 18-year-old high school senior. She was pretty smart but she worried her writing skills would prevent her from getting into a good school for medicine. She had her heart set on Colombia and honestly she could probably do it if she nailed her upcoming SAT. It was Phoenix’s job to make sure she did just that.

Heya Nick.

Phoenix hated it when his name got shortened to “Nick” but Ana was so cute he let it slide. She was an ultra peppy girl whose parents were from Central Mexico. She was born here in the U.S. and didn’t have an accent but her tanned skin and light brown eyes were a dead giveaway. You’d think she was on the cheer leading squad with the kind of body she had and a great set of perky B-cup tits completed the look. Phoenix had, on occasion, jerked off a few times to “Latina teens” videos after their tutoring sessions and if he squinted enough those brown skinned cuties looked just like Ana.

Shaking his mind free, he continued.

Heya Nick. I know it's early but I have a draft of my Colombia letter. I want you to try to see if its good. Want to make sure its perfect right? I know I don’t see you until Thursday but if you can give me feedback I’ll be happy! Gracias!

Those "its" were killing him. Sure enough there was an attached document.

The last email was from his faculty advisor, Dr. Nguyen. Her first name was a total mystery to Phoenix despite working with her the last year or so. She was a tiny (5’2) 38-year-old Vietnamese member of the English department at his university. She was surprisingly hot for her age but had a really small A-cup chest. Her tanned skin was also pretty hot though, Phoenix thought again uncontrollably.

Phoenix, I got your message. I’m afraid the only availability I have to meet is tonight. My earliest appointment otherwise would be next Tuesday. I realize this may put you behind where you need to be in order stay on track with your thesis so I’m making a special accommodation for you outside my office hours. Let me know soon. All the best. Dr. Nguyen.

Phoenix sighed. It seemed like he wouldn’t be getting a night off this week. In fact if anything he was overbooked. And then there was still Dom.

Phoenix picked up his phone but hesitated to answer. He could make it up to her by meeting her tonight for dinner, but then he wouldn’t be able to meet with Dr. Nguyen to discuss some much needed changes to his paper. Of course he could blow them both off and take a look at Ana’s application letter.
