Aftermath: Repopulation

A year ago the virus hit. No one realised quite how serious it was until it was too late. It spread quickly and killed quickly, and there was still no known cure. The virus spread around the world rapidly, destroying families in its wake.

The main hit seemed to be over for now. Experts estimate around 50% of the population had been wiped out, both in rich and poor countries. No one was unaffected. But now was not the time to dwell on the past. Humanity had to be saved, and quickly.

While populations were now lower than they had been after the war, there was just about enough people to keep society going, and keep governments in-tact, for now at least. What was greatly needed was a population boom though, but that would take at least 20 years to become effective in society. Still, may as well invest now before it became too late.

Many governments across the world came up with the same solution: compensation for repopulation. Many came up with different versions though. Some countries simply had a lottery, coupled people at random and forced them to create children, or face jail time. Others gave money in exchange for bringing new life into this world. People were expected to keep journals on who they had slept with and would submit this to the government, who would then pay them accordingly. Getting paid for having sex with one person was capped so the scheme heavily rewarded those who slept around with multiple partners.
