First it shall be decided, WHICH world of D&D your character will be made in, there are many a different types of universes for dungeons and dragons, it is open to make your own world, but it will require a good deal of work for it to properly work. now, here's a list of the campaign settings of Dungeons & Dragons.

Each of these are different worlds, or in some cases different areas, realms or dimensions of the same world, but they are not the only options, you may create a world if you wish. And, as just like with your character, it is you who is the creator and thus, what you write is law.
