Everyday Life with Monsters

BANG BANG BANG BANG

You groggily lift your head from the pillow as you hear the insistent knocking at your front door, wondering who the hell could have a reason to visit you so early in the morning. "I'm coming..." you mumble as you crawl out of bed and pull on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, to be half-way presentable to whoever is at your front door. Your eyes still half shut with sleep, you open the door to find a gorgeous woman dark-haired woman standing on your front step, wearing dark sunglasses and a tight fitting black suit jacket and skirt.

"John Doe?" She asks, as she glances to her clipboard for a moment and then back to you, carefully examining you from behind her glasses.

"Yuh.." you reply, squinting against the morning sun as you try to read the lettering on the van parked in front of your house. "That's me. What's this about?"

"I'm Agent Smith, from the Monster Immigration Bureau. I'm here with your, erm, new housemate." She glances to your wrinkled shirt and gym shorts, then looks back to your face. "Did you forget that they were arriving today, Mr. Doe?"

Furrowing your brow in confusion, you try to understand what she's trying to tell you. Of course everyone had heard the government was now having diplomatic relations with the newfound monster realm and you'd even heard on the news that they were starting some sort of an exchange student program, so the people from each country could learn about the other, but there was no way that you would have signed up for the program. You loved having your house all to yourself and the idea of sharing it with some stranger, who wouldn't even be human, was the last thing that you wanted to do.

"There must be some sort of mistake," You say as you rub the back of your head, your tiredness only making the whole situation more confusing. "I didn't sign up for that..."

A slight look of irritation crosses the agent's face and she thrusts the clipboard in front of your face, showing you your name in black and white on the paperwork. "This is your name, Yes? And your address on the line below?"

"Well, yes, but--"

She cut you off and tucked her clipboard back under her arm as she continued. "Listen. I've got a lot more houses to visit today and I don't have time to deal with people who are having second thoughts about volunteering for this. If you want to file a complaint, feel free to call our main office and our people will do everything they can to make you living adjustments as painless as possible." She glanced back over her shoulder and waved to whoever was standing behind her. "At any rate, here's your new housemate! Good luck!" Flashing you a forced smile, the agent stepped aside and revealed the monster to you for the first time.
