It's the future! And despite it all, the future has turned out to be pretty good. Free Use was made into law twenty years ago now, and society has largely adjusted. Oh, sure, a few older folks still grumble and complain -- but that's a part of civilization that's remained unchanged since the first farmers raised a ziggurat in the fertile crescent.

After some false starts and a rocky introductory period, the problems with Free Use have been ironed out. Men, of course, do the choosing. Women aren't eligible for Free Use until they turn twenty-five -- starting earlier proved to be too traumatic and did not provide the social benefits that everyone was hoping for.

Free Use itself was found to be a fairly difficult change in a woman's life, despite all the later benefits. To handle this, a system of schools was founded. They are run and paid for by the state (though some private ones exist) and have a standardized curriculum and structure. Women enter school at age 24, typically after college; a year that men spend in national service. It's a one-year course, structured something like a high school.

I'm an ordinary man in my fifties. I studied education when I was young, and jumped on the Free Use bandwagon as soon as I possibly could. I'm old enough to remember the pre-Free Use days, and I never want to go back.
