Paranormal Activity

Katie Featherstone pulls up in her driveway - school finished for the day, she was looking forward to relaxing with a cold glass of white wine and a bit of beading on the couch of the evening.

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Micah Sloat, her geeky, perpetually sarcastic boyfriend in the driveway. It dropped when she saw the huge, unavoidably expensive looking video camera in his hands, tracking her approach.

Getting out of the car, Micah spoke, his face hidden by the bright light of the camera.

"Hey, babe, what's up?" he asked, overly-nonchalantly.

"What is that?" the young brunette asked, grabbing her files from the car and walking towards the doorway. Micah backed up, filming Katie as if he was paparazzi and her a willing celebrity.

"Hello, baby," Micah replied, ignoring her question.

"Hi." Pushing him back through the doorway, Katie busied herself putting her keys on the cupboard by the door before turning back to him."Is that what I think it is?"

The geek popped his head around the camera for a split second to meet Katie's eyes. "I don't know what you think it is, but whatever it is, it's sweet."

"I think it's a giant-ass camera." she responded, snarkily. "What happened to the little handheld? I'll give you this though, it's definitely big... and impressive..."

"I tell you something else that's big... and impressive..." Micah retorted, far too quickly.

"Ha. Ha." the brunette sighed. "Pour me a glass of wine and let's talk about this whole situation."

Micah already had a glass of wine prepared, and grabbed it from the breakfast bar, handing it to the brunette, who, having deposited her bags at the door, flopped onto the sofa.

"So, the spookies, spooky?" Micah said, pointing the camera once again at his girlfriend. "I can't wait to get my hands on these spectral fuckheads. Gotta beat 'em up for messin' with my girl."

"Micah, shut up. This isn't funny!" Katie responded as she took a sip of her wine.

"Sorry, sorry. Okay. Well, I figure we set this rather nifty camera up somewhere - like our bedroom? - in the best position to catch some of these odd goings on. Once we've got something concrete on tape, we can go from there?"

"Sounds like a plan." there was a pause as Katie took another sip of her drink, and then stared into the depths of the glass. The moment stretched on. "Micah..."

He cocked his head to the side, and the camera panned a little off to the side. Katie felt his attention on her.

"You believe me, don't you?" the brunette enquired.

"Of course I do, beautiful. Here." He set down the camera, and pulled her up against him. She rested her head on his shoulder and he stroked her hair. "Everything will be okay. I promise."

She closed her eyes, and hoped what he said was correct.

She wasn't hopeful.
