Scary Stories to Tell: The Frat House

The abandoned house was plain creepy. Every time Heather passed it on her way to her dorm room from class it gave her the shivers. She remembered when she was in high school, all the kids would play truth or dare and it seemed that every game the house would be mentioned in a dare; ‘go egg the house,’ ‘go knock on the house door,’ ‘go in the house.’ Of course everyone who got dared to do any of those things chickened out.

“Earth to Heather.” Her boyfriend Carl said.

“What?” Heather said coming out of her daydream.

“I asked what we were going to do this Halloween?” He asked.

“Sorry, Natalie had set up a party. She didn’t say where. All she said was, wear costumes and bring alcohol.” Heather said rolling her eyes.

“Great, so basically she’s going to try to scare all of her pledges to death like she has the last three years.”

“Basically.” Heather replied holding her books tighter to her as a breeze picked up.

“Why do you even want to be a Theta Iota Theta anyway?” Carl asked.

“I don’t know, you don’t like the idea of dating a sorority girl?”

“Meh, just never really occurred to me that’s all.” Carl said.

“By the way, I’m not going as that slutty cop again. I want to be something fun. Slutty is so out of style.” Heather said.

“Fine. We can stop by the store later then.”

“Sounds good, bye honey.” She kissed him and the two went to their separate dorm rooms.

Her roommate Katie was already there.

“Hey,”

“So?” Katie asked raising her eyebrows.

“Yes, you can wear it. I talked Carl out of it, I have no desire to wear that uniform another year.”

“Yes!” Heather’s roommate pumped her fist in the air in triumph. “Do you know what you wanna be this year?”

“I don’t know, superheroes are in. Carl may want to do something like that.”

“Well you got 2 days to figure it out girl and the stores are gonna be sold out. Better jump on that.”

“Yeah, we are going to the store tonight.” Heather replied and got ready for her next class. As she bent down to pick up the books she would need for her next class Katie stole a look at her roommate’s gloriously large butt. A habit she always did when she knew she could get away with it. If given the chance she would worship Heather’s ass, but Heather had a boyfriend and she wasn’t going to push it.

“No, Natalie, I’m not going to that creepy house! You know people have died there!” Britney said to her sorority sister from TIT.

“So, think of how scary it will be especially for the pledges! Plus I’ve invited some of the brothers from Delta Iota Kappa. What’s the worst that can happen with 9 of us there. Besides, it’s the last big hazing week for the pledges. I’ve got something real fun in store.” Natalie said holding up the cow girl outfit that was on the rack up to her. It was complete with daisy dukes that hugged her forty five inch ass perfectly and a checkered red and white shirt. “This would look perfect on you Brit!”

“Yeah, if I wanted the whole world to see my ass. No thank you.” Britney rolled her eyes and started looking at one of the other costumes on display; this one looked more like a frilly blue dress and a white apron, complete with a blonde wig.

“Planning any trips to wonderland?” Natalie asked taking the cowgirl outfit for herself, for good measure she snagged a hat and some boots.

“At least it makes my girls look good.” Britney said squashing said girls together.

“Like you need it.”

“Look, I’ll go to the house, just promise you didn’t invite a bunch of horny boys. I’m definitely trying to be good this Halloween.”

“Yeah, I’ll believe that when pigs fly.” Natalie said laughing.

“Is Tim gonna be there?” Britney asked.

“Yeah. About that. I may need you to run some interference at some point tomorrow night. I want to be alone with him.” Natalie replied.

“Hey, what do you guys think?” Cameron popped out from the other dressing room dressed as a Native American girl. She had a long brown dress, a beaded headband with a couple of feathers in it and a raven black wig on that went down to mid-back.

“You look good Cam.” Britney said.

“So what about the old Kappa house?” Cameron said checking the price tag on the outfit.

“That’s where we are going to scare the bejeezus out of our pledges.” Natalie replied.

“Oooooh, I’m totally in.”

“How many girls are gonna be there?” Jack asked as Tim grabbed his biker outfit out of the closet.

“I don’t know Natalie didn’t say, just that there would be.” Tim said looking at his roommate who was looking online for a good costume.

“I just was thinking I’d get laid that’s all.” Jack said clicking no to a cheesy looking burglar outfit and looking at the next costume.

“Is that all you think about, dude you gotta lay off those late night websites.”

“Why do you say that?”

“These bunk beds are not exactly soundproof dude. I can hear everything you do down there. It’s disgusting.”

“Well introduce me to a girl, and I won’t have to watch those videos.”

“If I introduce you to a girl, you’re just gonna have real sex instead of hooking up with your hand.”

“Fair point.” Jack said deciding on a greaser looking outfit and clicking on the one day delivery option.

“Hurry up Megan, gosh!” Christi said standing outside the changing room.

“You can’t rush perfection!” Megan said from behind the door.

Christi was already wearing an archeology outfit. She had to search high and low to find one modest enough, the shorts were short, yes, but she felt it covered enough. The tube top covered her entire midriff, thankfully. She had her hair in a ponytail and a fake gun strapped to one thigh.

Megan came out from behind the door wearing a black and white spotted outfit complete with a bell around her neck and fake horns and ears on her head. She had black and white leather chaps complete with a tail on it as well.

“What do you think!?” Megan asked.

“Okay, but why though?” Christi asked.

“It’s better than being a monkey. Seriously if I have another guy this year dressed as a banana come up to me and ask if I want his banana I’m going to vomit.” Megan said referring to her costume last year.

“So a cow is better? Why not the cute kitten outfit.”

“So a guy can ask if he can pet my pussy. With this outfit, unless some girl comes up dressed all in green and asks if I wanna graze her grass I’m pretty sure no guy can really come up with any sex pun for this one.” Megan replied.

“Fair point.” Christi rolled her eyes. Megan had always dressed as an animal for Halloween. It wasn’t until she developed and got into college that guys came up with the puns though. Although she was pretty sure Megan liked the attention, after all, a monkey was begging to be harassed.

“Where’s James?” Megan asked. “I wanted to see what he thought.”

“He is off somewhere trying to find a costume. Seriously I don’t know what you see in my brother.” Christi said.

“He’s cute. Besides, a girl’s gotta settle down at some point.”

“Megan, you’re like only 21. You don’t need to think about settling down for another like, 4 years.”

“Whatever.”

“Well hello ladies.” James said coming from behind a rack. He was wearing a Spartan cape and carrying a plastic shield. He drew a jagged looking sword out from a belt. It looked hilarious over his jeans and white t-shirt, but the store had a strict policy that if a costume was even remotely topless, it couldn’t be worn as such in store.

“You look like a dork.” Christi said and burst out laughing.

“Hey James, what do you think!?” Megan rushed over to him and did a 360 twirl.

“Holy cow, you look beauuuuutiful.” He said stretching the u a little.

“Thanks.” Megan said and Christi rolled her eyes again in disgust.

“So where is this party supposed to be anyway James?” Christi asked her twin.

“That’s for me to know and you two to find out.” James said and earned an elbow in the stomach. “Ow, fine it’s the old Kappa Upsilon Mu house.”

“Fuck that I’m not going there.” Christi said immediately.

“Why not?” Megan said.

“You haven’t heard of the murders there?” Christi said.

“Oooooh, cool, how many were killed?” This one earned Megan an elbow to the stomach.

“Murdering people is not cool! Besides, no one really knows. Some say 10, some say 15. But it happened on Halloween 30 years ago.” Christi said.

“Cool, I’m in!” Megan said giggling.

“So, tell me again how you got permission to even be here?” Britney asked as the two girls walked up the steps to the old KUM house in their costumes. Britney in her blue dress and white apron, she had a blonde wig on with a black hairband and thigh high white stockings all the way down to black slippers.

“My mom has the keys, she’s trying to refurbish and sell the place.” Natalie said. She had her cowgirl hat on; the checkered shirt was tied in front to reveal just enough cleavage and a red bra. She had the daisy dukes on with red cowboy boots. Her naturally fire red hair completed her ensemble.

“Wish my mom was a realtor.” Cameron sighed.

“Come on, let’s get in and start decorating the place. Hopefully the boys bring some beer.” Natalie said unlocking the door and bringing the bag of decorations in with her. Britney and Cameron followed suit brining her own bag of decorations and props. Natalie set some spooky music up and the three began to decorate.

After what seemed like an hour, there was a knock on the door. Natalie hopped off the chair she was standing on, the fake bat plummeted to the ground. She hadn’t been quite tall enough to hang it up anyway.

“Who’s there?” Natalie asked peeking through the overly dirty peep hole.

“Jack and Tim,” Jack’s voice answered.

“Hey, yo, answer the door yah know.” Tim said.

“You sound like a boxer, not a greaser.” Jack said from behind the door.

Natalie opened the door and the two tall gentlemen walked in. Jack was a biker complete with skull cap, jacket, chaps, and boots. The only thing that wasn’t leather was his face. Tim had a fake pack of cigarettes rolled up in a white t-shirt that was two sizes too small for him. He had slicked back his long brown hair with grease giving it a shiny look. He also had on Italian style boots with blue jeans. For good measure he had a real cigarette tucked behind one ear. Between the two of them they carried a gigantic cooler full of beer.

“My don’t you two look handsome.” Natalie said.

“Who is it?” Britney called from the other room.

“Come here and I’ll introduce you!”

“Not yet I’m using the little girls’ room!” Britney called.

“Why didn’t you shut the door?”

“I have a better question! Where is the door?”

“Sweet!” Tim started for the noise.

“Ew, gross, grow up. Also, gross.” Natalie said picking up the bat and shoving it into Tim’s hands.

“Instead of being a pervo, help me decorate. Hand this up to me when I get up the ladder.”

“Alright, alright, besides I was only joking.” Tim said looking offended, but the offense soon disappeared as he watched Natalie’s ass as she climbed the ladder.

“The bat?” Natalie asked, his stare not going unnoticed.

There was a flushing sound and out came Britney.

“Hi, I’m Britney nice to meet you. I promise I used hand sanitizer.” She added as she held out her hand. “Natalie, you didn’t tell me the sinks didn’t work.”

“I told you it was a fixer upper.”

“Lucky I carry it in my purse.” Britney said.

“Jack and I guess you already know Tim.” Jack shook Britney’s hand and pointed his thumb over his shoulder at Tim who was now hanging a banner that said Happy Halloween.

The four of them continued hanging decorations and setting up the beer cooler.

Another knock on the door soon could be heard and the four of them gathered in the lobby.

“Who is it?” Natalie asked heading for the door.

“IT IS SPARTA!” A shout could be heard from behind the closed door.

“Stop being a dumbass. It’s Christi and James. I hope it’s okay I brought a friend with me.” Christi replied.

Natalie opened the door. “Hey guys, come on in. Yeah that’s fine, the more the merrier.”

James walked in carrying three big bags of ice, which he went to the cooler and dumped in. He bro hugged Jack and Tim. He had his full Sparta costume on, with real 6 pack abs to complete it; a fact that Megan had not stopped pointing out to Christi ‘You didn’t tell me your brother was that ripped.’ ‘Because he’s my brother and I don’t care that he works out.’

“Hi you two.” Christi said to Jack and Tim before introducing Megan. She had picked out a pair of hiking boots to go along with her costume.

Megan shook hands all around and immediately asked, “So who all was murdered here?”

“Megan!” Christi asked horrified.

“Those are just rumors, no one was murdered here.” Natalie said.

“Yeah, they all committed suicide like some kind of cult.” Britney said.

“OOOOOH really!” Megan replied.

The conversation continued as to who killed who and how haunted the house was. The party began, but Natalie refused to let anyone go anywhere until the rest of the guests arrived. She didn’t want to ‘spoil the fun.’

“So, superhero huh?” Katie asked Heather walked out of the bathroom wearing a cheerleading outfit, complete with pig tails, pon pons and plaid spanks.

“Yeah, he convinced me…” She said.

“Oh yeah?” Katie raised an eyebrow.

“It doesn’t look too bad does it?” Heather spun around, the skirt resting on the shelf of her ass gave Katie a good view of her plaid panties.

“No, no not at all… uh… speaking of Carl where is he?”

“He had to work late. So he said to go without him and he’d meet us there.”

“So what are we waiting for, I have the address of where we are going.” Katie said.

“Yeah, where are we going?” Heather asked.

“Some place called the Kappa Upsilon Delta house.”

Heather froze and she felt a deep dread in her stomach.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Katie said.

“Yeah, just… that house gives me the creeps.”

“Why?”

“It… just does… let’s go, we are already late and Natalie is going to kick us out if we are much later.”

The two girls left their dorm room and began to head towards the house. The sun had already set and trick or treaters could be seen running all around campus. At Glenville University Halloween was THE night and all the kids in town knew it. So they would hit the dorms often times needing to exchange bags in their parents cars when they would get too full.

As they approached the house, two blocks later Heather visibly shivered.

“So what happened here to make you so jumpy?”

“It’s just a local legend. About 30 years ago, the frat that lived here ended up dying mysteriously. It was during a big party and the members and a couple of sorority girls who were there were all found dead. The weird thing was, it was in the creepiest of ways, all of them died differently. It was just…” Heather shivered. “It was just weird and creepy. The house lost its charter and has been abandoned since.”

“That is creepy. The perfect place to party it sounds.”

“Yeah… I guess…” Heather said as Katie knocked.

“It’s about time you guys showed up. Where’s Carl?” Natalie answered.

“He’s gonna be late. He said start without him.” Heather said.

“Alright, I suppose the festivities can begin.” Natalie said and locked the door behind Heather and Katie.

“Alright everyone has been introduced?” Natalie said looking around the group. Everyone nodded.

“Great, then the fun can begin. Who here does not know the legend of the KUM house?” Natalie said dimming the lights.

Katie and Megan both raised their hands.

“It all started at a frat party on Halloween 30 years ago. One of the brothers brought out a book stitched together with human hair.”

The whole group collectively held their breath. Even the men dared not interrupt the telling of the local legend on Halloween Night.

“He claimed he got it from a store at the mall, a store that never existed. He said the book was said to possess a major power, it was supposed to be able to allow whoever wrote in the book to select how they died. Thinking it was a stupid game the whole fraternity and a couple of the sisters from the ASS sorority all held the book and wrote down how they wanted to die. That night, the power went out, and no matter how hard they tried to leave the house, they couldn’t seem to do so. That night, one by one, they all died according to how they wanted to go. The next morning one of the Alpha Sigma Sigma went over to see why her sisters didn’t come back. When she walked into the house, she saw all of them horribly mangled and broken, the walls covered in blood.”

Christi drew closer to Megan, who grabbed onto James’ arm. Britney hugged Tim tighter. Jack rolled his eyes, but didn’t push Katie away when she scooted closer. Heather felt lonely without Carl; she drew her arms around herself and let Natalie finish the story.

“The house was boarded up and no one has lived here since. What happened to the book, no one knows. Perhaps its purpose fulfilled it disappeared into whatever Hell it came from. Or it could be in this very house to this very day.” Natalie cackled a laugh as the lights flickered. Megan, Christi and Heather all three screamed.

“Or maybe… It’s right here!!!!” Natalie said as she pulled an ancient looking book out of a drawer on the center table. The book looked like it was crudely put together and that the pages were bound together with thick strands of blonde hair.

“Where did you get that? It looks so real!” Britney said grabbing the book from her and investigating it. The first 10 pages were written on, each page told a short story about how each of the 9 victims perished that night 30 years ago. Of course she knew it was fake, after they hatched their plan in the costume store the three T I T sisters went back to the sorority house and made it that very night. They also got a bunch of props for the scavenger hunt they would be doing as well.

“I found it one day when my mom and I were renovating the place. I read the stories. They are pretty gruesome.” Natalie said snatching the book back.

“I think we should put it back where you found it and leave.” Heather said.

“I second that.” Katie replied.

“I think it’s cool.” Megan said and peered over Natalie’s shoulder to get a good look at the book.

“I was thinking, in the spirit of Halloween, we should all write our names down and tell the book how we want to die. And since we are all sisters of Theta Iota Theta, how we die has to be based off of sex.” Natalie said cackling again.

“Nope, nope, nope.” Christi said.

“Yeah, that would be dope yo.” Tim tried.

“Still not a greaser man.” Jack responded.

“Whatever, I think it’d be fun.” Tim said.

“I do too, besides what’s the worst that could happen. You don’t really believe in that stuff anyway.” James grabbed the book.

“Yeah, I think we should do it.” Megan said placing a hand on James’ bicep.

“Let’s take a vote. Everyone in favor say Aye.” Natalie said.

Megan, Britney, Natalie, James, Tim, and Jack said Aye.

“All opposed.”

“It just seems like a bad idea.” Heather said. And her, Katie, and Christi all voted Nay.

“The Aye’s have it.” James said and snatched a feather pen off the desk.

“Wait, you can’t just make us sign our names in a book like that!” Katie said

“Oh yes we can, that is… if you want in the sorority.” Natalie said snobbishly.

“Come on guys, this will be the last bit of hazing, we promise.” Britney said and Natalie cast her a glare.

James opened the book to the next open page and began to scribble in it.

“Wait. Are we going to tell everyone how we wanna go, or leave it as a surprise?” Megan asked.

“You act like the book is actually going to kill us, there won’t be a surprise cause nothing is going to happen. Come on girls, you only live once.” Christi said snatching the book from James and writing in it.

James had already told her what Natalie’s plan was. He was in the DIK frat, and wanted to see his sister get into TIT. If he hadn’t told her, odds are she would have chickened out and they would have kicked her out.

“Who knows until you sign.” Megan said accepting the book and she began to scribble on the next available page.

“That’s the spirit girls, you have what it takes to make it in TIT. Megan, you should pledge next year. You two…” Natalie looked at both Heather and Katie with her eyebrows raised.

Heather’s heart sank. She wanted this more than anything. Her mom had been a TIT and the hazing really hadn’t been that bad, a couple of laps around the outside of the house in their underwear, the jock strap raid of the football team’s locker room, and probably worst up until this point the traditional maid rental. That had been embarrassing. The pledges had to dress up in those ridiculous maid outfits and clean the house of the DIK for an entire day. The only relief for that was the brothers were not allowed to touch them, or they suffer the wrath of Natalie. But this… this seemed too far. She didn’t want to put down how she wanted to die in that awful book. She watched as the book passed from person to person, each taking a new page and writing their name and how they wanted to die and then passing it to the next. Katie was the next to sign; she did so willingly enough, as she handed the book to Heather she whispered in her ear. ‘I think it’s a scam, they want to reveal how we want to sexually die and embarrass us, just put something stupid down that isn’t that embarrassing.”

Heather nodded and took the book. She took a deep breath, and signed.

After Heather signed the book and wrote down what she wanted, the lights flickered and went out. Of course there were more screams until Natalie turned the lights back on.

“Okay everyone. Now we split up. Three of us go to the basement, three on the main level, and three to the 2nd story.”

“Uh, what in the history of horror movies makes you think that’s a good idea?” Katie asked.

“Just do it, we are looking for anything that can help undo the curse of the book.” Natalie said. This part was a little lame she had to admit, but it was the only way she could scare them more.

“And just how do we do that?” Heather asked.

“We have to find a totem from each individual who died 10 years ago. There were 9 victims, so we each have to find one totem. Once we find all 10 we bring them back here and burn them along with the book and then we are free.”

Heather visibly relaxed; this was just a ploy after all. Another hazing exercises where she had other brothers from the DIK fraternity undoubtedly stashed around the house to scare them whenever they opened a closet door or what have you. It was just a scavenger hunt.

“Do we know what the items are?” Katie asked, also visibly relaxing.

“No, but their photo will be next to the totem.” Natalie said.

“Now, let’s see… how will we break down. Let’s do, James, you Megan and Heather you three take the basement. Katie, Tim, Britney and Me we will take the main floor. Cameron, you Jack and Christi will take the top floor.” Natalie said.

“Wait, we don’t even get to see what each other wrote? That’s kinda lame.” Megan said.

“Hmmmm, that’s true. Does everyone want to know what we all wrote?” Britney asked.

“I think we should wait until the end. You know, until we have all the pieces and then we can read it all before we burn it.” Cameron said.

“Oooh, I like you’re thinking and creativity Cameron. Yes, we will wait until you have all the totems and then we will reveal how each of us wants to die. Then we shall ceremoniously burn the book.” Natalie said.

“Now, split into your groups and away we go!"
