When it all started, my beautiful wife Jane and I had just had our son, and I had recently been promoted at work. By all accounts we were doing well, or at least moderately so: we had our own two-bedroom apartment in the city, had paid off our student loans, and had a fairly stable, happy marriage. We were both in our early thirties and had stable careers. No one, least of all me, could have predicted what would come next.
