Surprise Visitor

You stand in the doorway to your apartment in complete shock. When you heard the frantic knocking on your door, you wondered who the hell would be out in zero degree weather in the middle of the night while a snowstorm raged outside. The answer caught you so far off guard, you nearly fell over when you opened the door.

Anna was friend from college. You two weren't really close, but you had several classes together, you'd sit together in the lunch room and you did hang out from time to time. She's actually quite beautiful, but she had a boyfriend, so you never tried to get with her. When you both graduated, you found out she was heading to the west coast to try living in California, while you were heading to New York. You said your goodbyes and, mostly jokingly, told her that if she was ever in the area, she should look you up.

You haven't seen her for about three years now. You kept in touch via e-mail for a few months after college, but those eventually died off as the two of you got wrapped up in your lives. Your graphic design job kept you quite busy and Anna had some Marketing job that took up all her time. You had almost forgotten about her completely when this snowy December night came along.

Anna was standing in the doorway, white snow gathering on top of her strawberry blonde hair and her face was slightly paled from the cold. She was wearing a tight purple turtleneck sweater, but was otherwise unprepared for the weather. But it wasn't her appearance that confused you so much. By her feet were two large suitcases and a small handbag, also covered in snow.

"Hey." She said simply, her smooth voice still like silk. "I don't mean to be rude, but could you invite me in now? It's kinda cold out here."

"Oh!" You exclaim, suddenly returning to the present. "Right! Sorry! Of course, come in." You step to one side. Anna smiles at you and hurries into your apartment, shaking off snow as she walks inside. You keep your eyes on the suitcases she is rolling inside. What the hell was going on?

"Thanks, John. I forgot how cold it can get on the east coast." She laughed lightly.

"Do you wants some hot cocoa or something?" You ask. "It would warm you up."

"Oh, yes please." Anna nodded quickly. "I feel like a popsicle."

"Okay. I'll go make some. You can head into the living room and make yourself comfortable."

"Thanks." She said sweetly. "I'm glad you let me in. I was afraid you wouldn't be here."

"Well, you got lucky." You say over your shoulder as you walk into the kitchen. "I'm just in shock. I never would have guessed you'd show up on my doorstep without a call or anything. I wasn't expecting it at all."

"Yeah, that makes two of us." Anna replied.
