A Saturday morning with sun never disappoints, specially in Dover. The sun is at it’s high, the heat burning and there’s not a single person that’s not sweating. Well... except us.
I have been blessed with a group of friends that every single one of us has a pool, so yeah, our summer is being pretty great. But today is more special, after all, the youngest of us is turning 18 and he’s hosting a barbecue for us, so free food, free drinks, pool and chicks in bikinis all day. I’m definitely in heaven.
The only problem is that I’m the only one single. It’s not a real problem, I don’t mind that all my friends have girlfriends, but it would be good to have a girl wearing a bikini with me here.
“Hey! Nick! What are you daydreaming about?” Luke asks.
Luke. Well, his a friend that I have since birth and when I mean since birth it’s really since birth. There’s pictures with both of us in the hospital after my birth.
“Nothing much, just enjoying the sun.”
“Is the meat ready? I’m starving.” Says Lucy.
Lucy is Adam’s girlfriend. She’s sweet, a bit of a flirt and the best cheerleader we have in our school. And since I mentioned Adam, he’s the newest in our group. Well, not exactly the newest, we are friends for about five or six years. He’s an A+ student, the brightest of us all and certainly will enter any Ivy League College he wants.
“If you you like it rare it is.”
“I’ll take that.” She answers and walks close to me with her plate.
I place a couple on her plate and she kisses my cheek. “Thanks darling. You are the best.”
I open a smile and stay on the grill until everyone grabs some. After Lucy, Adam and Luke came for theirs and soon were followed by Jake, Lisa, Amy and Joe. Lizzie wanted her well-done so she was the last one to grab some.
And now it’s time to introduce you to the rest of the gang.
Jake and Joe are part of the basketball team. They are definitely two of our best players by far and Joe is the one getting older today.
Lisa is Joe’s girl. She’s the one everyone calls when having an emotional problem, she’s a mix of therapist, mother and group clown. From day one she was part of the group and even if they broke up someday, she’ll still be.
Amy is what you’d call the perfect girl next door. She’s cute, she is on the tracking team and dating Luke. She’s also rich, so sometimes she’s a bit spoiled, but she always try to see our side of things too.
Lizzie is a fierce latina. Her accent is non-existent. She’s fluent in both english and spanish and travels to Argentina at least once a year to visit her family. She’s also the most outgoing of our group, she likes to party, drink, flirt and sometimes she likes that a bit too much.
Oh! Almost forgot. I’m Nick, the only single from the group and always the one on the barbecue grill or any other place where food is being made. Everyone said I could bring a plus one, but I didn’t have anyone to bring so here I am, at one of my best friend’s birthday with 4 couples.
Well, at least I thought I didn’t have a plus one.
