The Feudal Horse

Everything was dark and peaceful, at first. Then there came the sounds of a heart beating as a baby came into view, all curled up amidst the darkness. Its tiny arms seemed to float in midair, but then its heart beat gradually faster as it curled a bit tighter. On its back appeared the glowing red outline of a spider-shaped mark. And its heartbeats got faster and faster as the seconds passed. The glow wasn't any brighter, but it burned more intensely on the babe's back. Painful... And he couldn't cry at all.

Just then, a naked young man woke up, startled. He panted heavily, sweat streaming down the sides of his face as he recoiled from the nightmare he came out of. He looked around his surroundings: inside a cave, near the entrance where moonlight shone in. He wiped his brow off and combed his fingers through his short, messy brown hair, crawling on all fours to look at the full moon in the starry sky. It was bright, less so than the sun, but he enjoyed how serene and peaceful it looked. And it didn't hurt his eyes to admire the heavenly orb. A smile cracked across his face a bit, and he crawled back into the shadows and laid down to sleep. 'Where am I?' he thought as he closed his eyes, drifting off. 'Who am I...?'

Morning brought sunlight to greet the vast land below, but it only reached the other side of the cave where the boy slumbered. The only thing that woke him were the chirping of the tree-dwelling birds. He sat up and saw that light was coming into his 'home'. He stretched his arms up before standing up, using the wall to brace himself. "What's that?" he wondered aloud. He peered out the cave's mouth and was instantly blinded, for there was more light than he was used to last night. With one arm, he shielded his eyes and peeked his squinty eyes out to acclimate to the brightness.

He emerged from the cave to see that everywhere was more colorful than in the dark, and he smiled at the greenery and sounds, triggering something in himself he didn't quite understand: happiness. "What to do today?" he asked himself. He then looked down, remembering his bare bod. "Oh, yes," he smirked. He decided to get some clothes to wear, but wasn't sure which way to go. So he headed for the trees, walking through the bushes and quickly found a dirt road. It seemed to curve both ways from where he was; his stomach started to growl and he held it, so he decided to take the rightward path.
