The Journey Back

After the defeat at the Giants Spine, Lynessa was forced the run for her life. Narrowly escaping the Duchess's men, she fled the camp and went south, the sooner she was in friendly territory the better. But between her and safety lies miles and miles of war torn country her lord's army had swept through. Days passed, running ragged through the hills and evergreen forests, using her magic where needed to escape capture.

In a risky move, she scurries into an ancient dwarvish mine. The smooth stone tunnels and grand forge halls had long since been abandoned by their creators, something had taken up residence here, but in her blinding pace, she was unable to investigate. Fleeing, hearing the sound of yapping hounds and rushing footsteps behind her, she knew her fate was sealed unless she could think of something and fast. She turns corner after corner, her eyes scanning for something, anything. The light of the torches behind her growing brighter and brighter as they were practically at her heels now. That's when she game to a massive chamber, unfinished by the dwarves, supported with massive, wooden beams and pillars. In the center, a staircase leading to a blinding natural light. Clamoring up the stairs as fast as she could, crossbow bolts were whizzing by her, through the air and bouncing off the stone work. She reaches the top, turning back only for long enough to seal off the room behind her. She extends her hand, a bolt of bright white light shooting forth from her finger tip as it slams, not into her pursuers, but the decaying wooden supports. One such support exploding in a mess of stone and splinters as it fails another follows pace, and another and another. The supports themselves crashing down only moments before the stone it was supporting follows suit as she scrambles outside, launching herself into the light along with a massive cloud of dusk plumes out of the hole.

The rumbling lasts for minutes, maybe an hour even. She was physically exhausted as she was not used to such running, but she had finally given herself enough time to rest. Coughing and swatting away the dust, she could see a small, isolated valley below. In the center was a plain town of wooden and stone construction. The sun setting behind the mountains, she slowly began the track down into the hamlet, hoping to find a place to rest and develop a game plan.
