The Mall

My name is Shoshanna. I turn 18 on Friday. There is no party planned. That's because my parents just moved us to Texas. My dad is career military. Air Force. Which means I get to move every couple years and rarely have time ti fit in. Its hard to keep friends when you never stay anywhere.

I like movies and playing guitar and singing. My mom is from Hawaii and my dad is from Oklahoma with half white, half Native American heritage. People tell me I have a pretty "exotic" look, whatever that means. I don't know. What it often means is no one is sure what race I am. If it means I get dates then that is not true. I've been on a few "group dates" with shy boys that never go anywhere and I always get asked to the school dances fairly quickly. But that's about it. My best friend is a boy, Chris. We hung out most days at my last school in California. I helped teach him to surf and he's not too bad. He taught me guitar and I'm pretty darn good if I do say so.. We tossed around starting a band but never did. We FaceTime or Skype when we can, but dad told me to try and find new friends. So I applied for a summer job at the movie theater and got it.

I had also applied at the music store but the owner just said, "You have to be a musician to work here," and walked away, without even asking if I was. Seriously?

I don't get why I couldn't have stayed in California during the summer and surfed with Chris every day until having to move here for my senior year of high school.

But I guess it is what it is. Hard to argue with a Lieutenant Colonel.

I'm about to go walk into the Mall and start my first day of work. Wish me luck. I'm nervous.
