The New Gods

"Before they came, we were nothing more than beasts. We crawled in the dirt, fighting over scraps of food, mouthfuls of water. We were on a course to destroy ourselves, until the day they arrived. They came from the sky, in great ships of metal and glass. When they set their holy feet upon our soil, we witnessed them, in all their glory. Their divine forms were perfection incarnate. Even the lowest among them was far faster and stronger than the greatest of our warriors, and they commanded great sorceries that afforded each and every one of them the strength of an army. They could have wiped us out, but in their mercy, they instead decided to teach us.

And so we learned. And we grew, and we rose. With their aid, we built cities, we colonized the moons, we ended hunger, and made sickness a thing of the past. We found and uplifted the others sheltered in the warmth of our sun. They allowed us to use the technologies they gave us to emulate their divine form, for in their humility, they did not call themselves gods.

One day, they told us that they had to go. That they had been called away. They said that when we were ready, we would find them, and join them among the stars. But they also gave a warning. They warned that the stars were not kind. They bid us to prepare for terrors beyond imagining.

So we prepared, and we set forth upon the stars. And we found the horrors they spoke of, and in turn we found that we were not prepared.

The war against the demons was savage. In the end we beat them back, but the effort cost us our unity. Our empire was shattered, our peace was dissolved, but worst of all, our faith was lost. We were lost in the great darkness of the void. Until today. Earlier today, we received a transmission. It was in the divine language of our benefactors. The transmission read thusly: _We are humanity. If you are out there, come find us. _Rejoice my friends, for on this day, we go to meet the gods!"
