The Remote

It had been a long week. The latest project deadline was yesterday, but it wasn't finished until this morning. My boss was jumping down my throat even though the delays were caused a week ago by the customer (but that doesn't matter). Thankfully it was now done and it was the weekend.

I turn off my phone, not wanting to be bothered at all. I head to the living room to find my upgraded cable system installed and waiting. I turn it on, grabbing the remote, I find the least offensive, most relaxing show I can find.

It's an animated movie, starring a teenaged blonde with extremely long hair. The movie is close to the beginning, where the heroine has stepped from her tower for the first time ever.

As the song plays I leave the room, stripping from my work clothes and putting on my lounging clothes. I grab a glass of wine and sit back down in front of the TV.

I grab the remote and look at it, trying to figure out what the myriad of new buttons do. Most of them I can figure out, contrast, sound, display. But there's one that's a little different. On the bottom there's a green rectangle that says 'Immerse'

I look up at the TV, just to see what the button will do, the movie is at the part where the thief and princess go out onto the lake to watch the lanterns. I press there button and a prompt comes up. 'Limited' or 'Full'

Unsure what they mean, I select Limited. Within a blink everything changes. No longer do I have a glass of wine, now it's a flower. I'm not on my couch, instead I'm out on a lake. And I'm no longer alone, I see the thief next to me, handing me another flower. With a start I realize I am the princess. Mentally I react, my mind racing as i try to figure out how this happened. My body still moves, setting another flower onto the water, softly so it floats away. My eye catches a small light, a little reflection on the surface of the water reflected back at me.

My other thoughts are forgotten as a sense of wonder takes over. I lift my head to the sky to see a lantern float above the castle. I jump up, rocking the boat as I rush to the bow of the boat. I stare, transfixed as a wave of light begins to rise over the city, lighting up the sky around us. My heart begins to beat faster, the joy of the moment taking complete control as the sky fills with light.

I test my head on the bow watching as my dream comes true, all the lanterns rising from the boats around me create a scene that leaves me breathless. Still something's missing, something's not right. I look down then back at the thief. I smile as he holds two lanterns in his hands, already lit. I sit down across from him.

"I have something for you too," i say add i reach behind me. I grab a satchel and hold it in front of me. He pushes it away, and hands me a lantern. Together we lift it up to the sky and watch it float away. My eyes are drawn again to the sky, watching the lights across the calm waters. I point to a light that's about to skip along the water. I reach out and touch it with my fingertip, guiding it to the sky. As I watch it float away I feel a hand on mine. I turn to see Eugene touching my hand. I feel butterflies in my stomach as I turn to face him. He takes both of my hands as we're begin to sing. Somehow we both know the words and even without music we sing together perfectly.

My breath catches in my throat as he brushes a strand of hair from my face. As were sing, i fel drawn to him, the rest of the world disappears as I lean closer to him, getting drawn into the moment. His hand moves to my head, pulling me closer.

His eyes are drawn away though, right when i think we're going to kiss. He frowns and pulls away. He's distracted and it stops the moment in its tracks. In silence he begins to row.

I'm shaking as I snap back to my reality. I'm no longer on a boat, I don't have long blonde hair and I'm alone. I look up at the TV to see the movie progress. I steady my hand, careful not to spill my wine as I try to grasp what happened to me. I look at the remote, convinced that this device sent me into the body of the princess on the screen. But that can't be right.
